Modern Geology CV Specifications

For job seekers, the CV is amongst the most important documents you must have in order to apply for a position. It’s the only medium by which you present yourself to a recruiter. Hence you have one shot and must make sure it counts by providing a CV that best characterizes you as a person and a professional.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A MODERN CV

  1. Terminology: The CV is short for curriculum vitae. The two are used interchangeably and widely accepted.
  1. The CV Length: Modern CVs normally range from one to two pages and do not exceed two A4 size pages
  1. Standard CV format and page setup: Modern CVs come in different formats and designs. However, all have some standard information that must be presented. These include;
  1. Picture (photo): All modern CVs should have a clear and appropriate « Professional/Formal » photo. 4×4 format is best. This is very important as it gives your physical appearance to the recruiter. Do not use your recreational photos here.
  2. Identification (Personal information): Your name, date of birth, date of birth, address or permanent residence, marital status, number of kids, phone and E-mail are required here.
  3. Summary: A short summary of your competences and may be included but it’s not mandatory.
  4. Professional Experience: This is one of the most important sections of your CV. Present your working experience from the most recent to the oldest, clearly spelling out the company, position held, start and end date and summary of some of the major activities or duties you carried out at each post. It is even more interesting to recruiters when you include some basic statistical data reflecting your level of success achieved for every duty.
  5. Professional Training: This is optional and works for people who have done a number of specialized trainings that are important for the position they are applying for. State the institution, training certificate obtained and date.
  6. Education: Present your academic achievements from the highest to the basic. It is mostly accepted that you present your university and high school levels only, not going back till primary education. The school attended, date and certificates obtained and the points to present here.
  7. Competences: Here you present the competencies that you may have gained through vocational training, seminars or workshops. It includes Computer literacy, use of certain specialized equipment, mastery of some specialized techniques in your domain etc. This is an efficient and subtle means to showcase your capabilities.
  8. Languages: In this field you have to list the different languages and the corresponding level of spoken, reading and written mastery you have for each. This shows that you can easily integrate a multilingual team and also that you are a hard worker.
  9. Hobbies: Simply list your hobbies or recreational activities you love most. Be honest.
